THE INTRIGUING DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HORSES & DONKEYS

Horses evolved and roamed in regions of open plains. Any and all threats could be seen from a mile away. As prey animals, horses will almost always run in the opposite direction of a threat or danger. The open plains rarely had anything to prevent or hinder them from fleeing. As such, horses use and optimize their speed and flight instincts to stay alive and stay safe.

Donkeys, on the other hand, evolved and roamed in hilly mountainous regions. The threats to their life and safety were hidden behind rocks and hills, meaning there were a lot more places for threats to sneak up on them. Additionally, the direction away from a threat was a sheer wall or perhaps a cliff. So, while a horse’s first instinct is to run at the slightest provocation, a donkey’s instinct is to stop to survey the situation. Because they use a thought process to stay safe, they are considered very smart.
